University of The Built Environment welcomes the launch of Construction Skills Mission

Posted on: 26 June, 2025

The University of the Built Environment is proud to support the launch of the Construction Skills Mission and the establishment of the Construction Skills Mission Board, a major cross-sector initiative aimed at ensuring the construction industry has the skilled workforce required to meet the UK’s housing and infrastructure ambitions.

Led by the Construction Leadership Council, the Board will help drive the Government’s £625 million investment in construction skills, to support the delivery of a £725 million national infrastructure and construction pipeline.

A key priority for the Board will be to develop and implement a national strategy to recruit an additional 100,000 construction workers each year by the end of this Parliament, a critical step in securing the future of the UK’s built environment.

As part of the Government’s Plan for Change, over 40,000 industry placements will be created through a £100 million investment, with an additional £32 million from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Coordinated through Jobcentres, these roles will offer tailored, on-the-job training to meet employer needs. This sits alongside a £1 billion support package to help more disabled people and those with health conditions into work.

As a leading academic institution dedicated to the built environment, and a proud member of the Board, the University is committed to shaping and delivering this national effort. We will work in close partnership with government, industry, and training providers to address the sector’s most urgent skills challenges.

With a unique focus on construction and infrastructure education, the University is well placed to support and advance the Mission’s five core priorities:

  • Boosting employer confidence to hire and train
  • Creating clear and accessible entry pathways into the sector
  • Expanding access to high-quality training and learner support
  • Ensuring funding systems work effectively for both learners and providers
  • Promoting long-term, rewarding careers in construction

Through our applied teaching, industry-focused research, and strong employer partnerships, we are already preparing students to lead in areas such as sustainable design, construction management, and modern methods of construction.

We are proud to play a central role in the Construction Skills Mission and to help equip future generations with the expertise, confidence, and ambition to creating a sustainable built environment where people live, work and create.
