Overview

Building services engineers play a vital role in creating safe, efficient and sustainable environments within our buildings. From heating, lighting and power to lifts, escalators and acoustics, they ensure that essential services run reliably and securely.

This apprenticeship, designed to align with the current building services engineering senior technician standard, is delivered fully online and equips employees with the technical skills to plan and install electrical and mechanical systems within buildings.

What apprentices will learn

This apprenticeship develops core competencies in areas such as:

  • Championing sustainable practices that support net-zero goals
  • Harnessing the latest digital tools (CAD, Revit, BIM, BEMS) to design smarter, more efficient engineering solutions
  • Delivering high-quality, data-driven building services with precision and innovation
  • Producing clear, professional engineering proposals that meet industry standards and exceed expectations

Apprentices combine academic study with practical experience, gaining valuable experience while working directly within your organisation in a relevant role.

Who should apply?

Applicants are likely to be working in the following types of organisation:

  • Consultancies, providing services such as building services design, sustainable energy systems, installation inspections, specification and cost control to a variety of client companies
  • Multidisciplinary construction companies, requiring specialist design and planning skills for a range of projects
  • Major house building companies, advising on energy efficiency in design
  • Universities and other educational institutions, requiring ongoing building systems support and maintenance in addition to occasional customised design work
  • Local authorities, requiring systems maintenance and design support across a range of facilities

BSC (Hons) PGCert (Research) ACIAT

Jon is the archetypal career-changer, having worked in the private sector for over 25 years prior to reading for a degree. He graduated in Architectural Technology from the University of West London (UWL). He is now a postgraduate researcher at the University of Portsmouth on the evaluation of building performance. The focus of this study is predicting building performance in a changing climate, using dynamic simulation modelling to create and test environmental scenarios in a virtual environment
