With almost two decades of experience in the construction sector, Menaka had already established herself as a trusted professional, overseeing the financial and procurement side of major aviation projects in Dubai. Alongside her demanding role, she is also a mother to two boys, aged 11 and 7.
“I’ve worked across both pre- and post-contract stages, from estimating and tendering to risk management and contract administration,” she says.
But I wanted to align my skills with industry demand and take my career to the next level. That’s what inspired me to study for an MBA.”
Choosing the right university
When Menaka began exploring her options, the University of the Built Environment came highly recommended.
“I received strong recommendations about the University of the Built Environment, and after considering them, I realised this was the best decision for my professional growth,” she said. “The lecturers were excellent, and the programme delivery was outstanding.”
As an international student based in Dubai, the flexible nature of the University of the Built Environment’s online learning model was crucial.
She said: “I’d seen the difference we make for children and young people both through the design of buildings and ensuring buildings are well maintained. I wanted to be of greater service to the schools in my community.
“Gaining a qualification through flexible online study allowed me to learn at my own pace, balance my studies with my job and my family, and access quality education from anywhere,” she says. “It’s such a convenient and efficient way to advance your career.”
Support that fits real life
For a working mother juggling deadlines, client meetings and school runs, the ability to fit study around life made all the difference.
“The programme was a perfect fit for my busy schedule,” Menaka says. “Everything about it worked so well - the course materials were engaging, the lecturers were truly committed, and communication was excellent.”
That support soon translated into strong academic results, with Menaka achieving a Merit in her MBA.
It also led to other positive results. “Studying for an MBA with the University of the Built Environment gave me high recognition in the industry,” she said.
“In fact, I was fortunate enough to secure a new job while I was still waiting for my results. It really uplifted my career.”
From virtual learning to real-world connection
After two years of study, Menaka made the journey from Dubai to Reading, UK, to attend her graduation ceremony - a moment she describes as “a truly remarkable and enriching experience.”
After months of online study, the ceremony allowed her to fully immerse herself in the academic environment and finally meet her lecturers and classmates face-to-face.
“It provided opportunities for meaningful conversations, networking, and forming friendships that will last beyond graduation,” she says.
“Attending the ceremony in person made the achievement feel even more special, as I could celebrate this milestone surrounded by peers and mentors who supported me throughout my journey.
It was a memorable and inspiring experience that added a new dimension to my studies.”
A message to other aspiring professionals
Looking back, she says the experience gave her far more than a qualification.
“I’m very happy with the programme - it was completed precisely within two years. The graduation day and the welcome from the university were incredible; it truly made me feel like a proud member of a community.
“I would always highly recommend this programme to anyone.”
For other international professionals - especially working mothers - Menaka’s advice is simple:
“Please don’t wait - do it. It will help you start a new chapter in your career.”
