Jacqui teaches Research Methods across the Built Environment project modules at UBE, with particular expertise in undergraduate provision. Her teaching focuses on supporting students to develop applied research skills, critical thinking, and academic writing within professional and work-based learning contexts.

Jacqui Thijm is a Higher Education practitioner and doctoral researcher with a focus on student experience in Built Environment education. Her research explores belonging and mattering for home-based professional students studying part-time or online while working in industry. Drawing on qualitative and narrative approaches, her work examines how everyday academic practices, staff–student relationships, and institutional systems shape students’ sense of being valued and supported. With extensive experience teaching and supporting research-project students in the Built Environment, she is particularly interested in relational pedagogy, inclusive academic practice, and improving engagement and retention in professional, work-based learning contexts.

Jacqui brings a diverse industry and education background spanning pharmaceutical research and development, further and higher education teaching, health and safety, and student support. Her experience across regulated, professional, and academic environments informs her work in Built Environment education, particularly in relation to professional practice, risk, ethics, and learner support. This interdisciplinary background underpins her interest in applied research, work-based learning, and supporting students who balance study alongside professional and personal responsibilities.
