Chris Lowry

Biography

Chris is an experienced architectural educator with over thirty years of involvement in architectural education across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. His academic practice is embodied in an integrated approach to Architectural Design and Architectural Technology informed by extensive professional practice experience and a sustained interest in the translation of architectural ideas into built form.

Chris positions creativity, materiality and construction technology as inseparable aspects of architectural design and these considerations are at the heart of his teaching methodology. Employing digital three dimensional modelling Chris’ explores building components, material systems and processes of assembly in developing a critical understanding of how technological resolution contributes positively to architectural ambition. Chris joined UBE as Programme Lead for Architectural Design Technology in July 2026.

Research interests

Chris’ research activities involve two interconnected topics, Architectural Design and Drawing, and Architectural Technology and Making. Drawing-based research explores architectural representation as a design, investigative and pedagogical methodology, encompassing exhibited work, publications, competitions and the development of a self-authored drawing archive as learning resources.

Making-based research investigates how architectural ideas, materials and construction processes translate into built form, particularly through digital modelling of building case-study methodologies. Collectively, this research connects what are often distinct considerations of architectural drawing, design, technology subject areas and their teaching.
